So people not yet born

March 15, 2013

Psalm 102:18-22

Write this down for the next generation
so people not yet born will praise God:
“God looked out from his high holy place;
from heaven he surveyed the earth.
He listened to the groans of the doomed,
he opened the doors of their death cells.”
Write it so the story can be told in Zion,
so God’s praise will be sung in Jerusalem’s streets
And wherever people gather together
along with their rulers to worship him.

Today’s Psalm reading reminded me that we don’t live this God-life for ourselves.

  • We live and record it for those who come after us. Who might need your account in years to come?
  • And, we don’t live this life alone, either. We are surrounded by vast amounts of wisdom from those who have lived this life before us; only a fool would ignore resources left to offer life. Who are you watching from the past?
  • This life is for God’s purposes. God has been setting people free–I want to be in the freedom business, too. Who do you enslave?

    Legacy. Sometimes I wonder if this is another way to describe, or another aspect of the Holy Spirit. I admit to hoping so, because the Spirit is the part of the Trinity I understand least.

      Not sure about that, as the sole function of the Holy Spirit is to point to Jesus, not really about legacy per se. The Holy Spirit can certainly call people in various ways, and those people may leave a legacy for us to follow, but it’s not pure Spirit per se. The bedt news is that because of the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, the Spirit is the member of the trinity we have the opportunity to know most intimately.
